For the past year and a half, Deb Payson has been the executive director of the Marblehead Chamber of Commerce. Payson has been courted away, however, to become the director of development for an international design program run jointly by MIT and the Singapore University of Technology and Design.
As Payson explained, “I always want to work in a job in which I can put my heart into what I do. This has that component. Plus, it’s MIT.” Payson has a BA from Colgate University and a master’s degree in public administration from the McCormack Institute at UMass Boston.
The Board is looking for a replacement but plans to take its time to do so correctly. As George Barbuzzi, the president of the chamber’s board of directors said, “We’re not in panic mode. We want to make the right choice.”
They have explained, however, that they don’t want a gap in the leadership. As Barbuzzi said, “We don’t want to lose any of the momentum we have built up under Deb’s leadership, so we plan to move quickly to find the right leader for the Chamber.”
